Even the Lake Wales accommodations can feel the stress of the overflow from the Daytona 500 only 100 miles up the road. Book your reservations early. Daytona Week can clog the hotels all the way down to Lake Wales. We’re talking about the first week of the NASCAR season which entails all kinds of activities and not just the racing. The week of the Mega Bucks B.A.S.S. Tournament back around 1988-89, I traveled from Leesburg, FL. to Ocala, FL. where I was to fish with one of our Humminbird Reps. the next day on Lakes Orange/Lachloosa. When I arrived in Ocala, I could not find a room anywhere in town. I started back tracking to Leesburg looking for any hotel/motel with a vacancy sign. I wound up back where I started in Leesburg and slept on the floor of a room rented by another sponsors rep. The point is, if you plan your Florida fishing vacation around the time of the Daytona 500, make sure you make you’re reservations far in advance and guarantee the room. Same goes for the winter quarter December through February when all the Orlando amusement parks (Disney, Universal Studios etc.) are at full tilt with winter vacationers can put a strain on our Lake Wales accommodations. Spring break does not cause any problems since these kids sleep twenty to a room, in their cars or on the beach, if they can get away with it, so they can stay close to the action. You could stay in Winter Haven if necessary but try to stay on the east side around Cypress Gardens. Staying any farther away than that would mean driving more than 30 minutes to get to Lake Kissimmee for example.
